How do you play never have I ever?
Sit in a circle and everyone holds up ten fingers. On your turn, say “Never have I ever…” followed by something you have genuinely never done. Everyone who has done it puts one finger down, and anyone can ask for the story behind it. Play continues round the circle until only one person has fingers left. That person wins, or at least has led the most sheltered life.
The finger version needs no drinks, which makes it suitable for family gatherings, teenagers, work socials and anyone who isn’t drinking. The questions on this page are all clean. They rely on funny everyday confessions rather than shock value.
What is the strategy?
To get others out, pick things you have never done but suspect most people have. If you have never been on a plane, “never have I ever been on a plane” knocks everyone else down a finger. That is also why the game is fun. You learn surprising things about your friends from the questions they ask as well as the fingers they lower.
Targeting one person (“never have I ever lived in Pune”, when only one player has) is allowed, but it gets old quickly. The best rounds are universal and slightly embarrassing: almost everybody has waved back at a stranger who wasn’t waving at them.
Can you play it online or over text?
Yes. On a video call, everyone holds their fingers up to the camera. In a group chat, keep score with a running count of “fingers left” after each message. It is slower but works well for friends in different cities. Ask one person to keep track so nobody argues about the total later.
House rules for a good game
- Honesty, not interrogation. Lower a finger if it is true. Telling the story is optional.
- Keep it kind. No questions designed to expose a particular person’s secret or a sensitive topic.
- Match the room. Use the teens and families list when children are playing, and save the adult list for adult groups.
Never have I ever pairs well with other no-setup games. Try would you rather for quick debates, two truths and a lie with party scoring, or a truth or dare deck on one phone. For a cleaner party set, see clean truth or dare for adults and truth or dare for teens.
