How do you play would you rather?
The rules fit in one sentence. Someone asks a question with two options, and everyone has to pick one, with no “neither” and no “both”. The fun is in the explanation. Ask “why?” after every answer, because the reasons are where people reveal how they think. Someone who would rather have a pause button might be overwhelmed. Someone who wants a rewind button might have a regret. Neither is the right answer, but both start a conversation. Swap who asks after every question so everyone gets a turn in charge.
There is no scoring, which makes it ideal for car journeys, queues, dinner tables and group chats. To make it competitive, have each player predict what another player will choose. Award a point for every correct prediction.
What makes a good would you rather question?
A good question is balanced. If nearly everyone picks the same option, there is nothing to discuss. Both options should be tempting, or both should be equally awful. It is quick to picture: sneezing glitter is instantly funny, while a complicated scenario needs too much explaining. And the best ones are revealing. “Would you rather be remembered for what you did or how you treated people?” is short, but the answer tells you something real.
When you write your own, start from a trade-off people actually face, such as money against time, comfort against adventure, or truth against kindness. Then exaggerate it until it becomes funny or absurd. Read it aloud before you use it: if it takes more than one breath to say, cut it down.
Which questions suit which group?
Use the funny list for parties, big groups and breaking the ice. Everyone can answer instantly. The deep list is better one-to-one or in small groups, ideally late in the evening. The kids and families list is made for dinner tables and long drives, and pairs well with our family game night ideas. The couples list is a gentle way into a date night conversation. If you want to go deeper afterwards, try truth or dare for couples or the 36 questions.
